In recent years, human capital managers all over the federal government are coming to realize that they need to go the extra mile to recruit the new generation of feds, and keep them in the tent through their productive years. Now, in an exclusive report, FederalNewsRadio's Max Cacas reports that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, an agency already considered one of the "best places to work in the federal government", has negotiated a new contract with its biggest labor union including significant new scheduling flexibilities for almost all its workers.

The recent concern over the spread of the H1N1 flu virus has again called attention to "continuity of operations" (COOP) in the Federal Government. According to the most recent report from the Office of Personnel Management, just over half of all Federal agencies include teleworking as part of their COOP planning. A local group held a lunchtime event yesterday at the Federal Triangle to push the cause of teleworking.

With numerous cases suggesting the spread of swine flu on college campuses in recent weeks, medical experts continue to recommend preparation for a possible H1N1 pandemic this fall. The Undersecretary of Management for one of the largest Federal departments is ordering agencies to test teleworkers' abilities to work away from the office and review other continuity-of-operations planning all this week.
