Taliban Looking For A Swap 02/07/10
There are reports the Taliban threatening to kill captured US soldier Bowe Bergdahl if US doesn't agree to swap for prisoners including Pakistani scientist Dr. Aafia Siddiqui & others on list previously given to US officials in Afghanistan. Pakistanis shouted anti-American slogans and burned the Stars and Stripes last week in protest of a New York jury's conviction of Siddiqui. Siddiqui who is linked to Al Qaida tried to kill Americans while detained in Afghanistan.
Missile Plan Approved 02/05/10
Romania's defense department has approved a U.S. plan to deploy interceptor missiles there as part of a missile shield to protect Europe. A State Department spokesman said the facilities were due to become operational by 2015 and were aimed at defending against "current and emerging ballistic missile threats from Iran."The announcement is part of the revamped U.S. missile defense approach to take the place of a scuttled plan for a radar site and interceptor rockets in the Czech Republic and Poland.

Holder decided on Christmas Day terror suspect 02/03/10
Attorney General Eric Holder said Wednesday he made the decision to charge the Christmas Day terror suspect in civilian court rather than the military system, with no objection from all the other relevant departments of the government. According to the Associated Press, the attorney general wrote in a letter to Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell that the FBI told its partners in the intelligence community on Christmas Day and again the next day that Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab would be charged criminally.

"You shouldn't use your power to in any way influence a discussion or evaluation of the issue," Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions warned Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and Chair of the Joint Chiefs Micheal Mullen during a hearing to tread lightly during the evaluation phase of DADT. Mullens responded, "For me this is not about command influence, this is about leadership." Gates said, "we can't possibly evaluate the impact on unit cohesion, on morale, on retention, on recruiting unless we encourage people to tell us exactly what they think."
China is not happy with the U.S. 02/02/10
State media complained bitterly about the a $6.4 billion dollar military package for Taiwan. The Chinese say the sale will complicate U.S./Sino relations. China claims Taiwan is it's own, but the 14 thousand sq mile Island of 23 million people says it has no master. China is threatening sanctions against U.S. companies, but for the U.S. those threat pale by comparison against an even bigger threat --a military showdown between the U.S. and China over Taiwan.
Do you know what a Loya Jirga is? 01/28/10
It's a Pashto term for "grand council" and the Afghan government has invited the Taliban to attend one. A Loya Jirga is a consultative system that Afghans have used for more than 1,000 years to settle affairs of the nation or to rally people behind a particular cause. The first Jirga was held near Kandahar in 1709 to oust an brutal governor appointed by Iranian conquerors. The last was 2006 in Qalat to discuss the rights and sovereignty of Balochistan. They are often conducted to promote unity.

Bible Verses Prohibited 01/24/10
A defense contractor is going to voluntarily stop stamping references to Bible verses on combat rifle sights made for the U.S. military. The inscriptions are on telescoping sights that use radioactivity to create light and help shooters pinpoint the enemy day or night. They reference Scriptures in which Jesus calls himself "the light of the world" They raised concerns because the government prohibits proselytizing by American troops in predominantly Muslim countries. Trijicon says it will end the practice and provide the military with free modification kits to remove Bible citations from the 300,000 rifle sights already in use.
