Five men were arrested at Mexico City's Benito Juarez International Airport yesterday after a failed hijack attempt. An Aeromexico airplane was hijacked in Cancun and flown to Mexico City as the hijackers threatened to blow up the plane.
This was the greatest fear for Mexican authorities as a result of insecurity in that country brought on by the drug war. The hijackers reportedly from Bolivia demanded asylum and to talk with President Felipe Calderon.
There had not been a hijacking in Mexico, the U.S. or Canada since the 9-11 attacks and a part of the reason was the strict security that was put in place afterward. But five men managed to take control of an airliner in Mexico yesterday with 104 people on board with a full tank of fuel and capable of reaching U.S. soil.
Granted they didn't get their wish which was to circle Benito Juarez airport until they got to talk to Mexican President Felipe Calderon, but just being able to assume command and control of the plane means a there is a serious vulnerability in the Mexican commercial aviation community.
This group may not be the last who try to take advantage of it ...soon!
