Only 7 percent of adults think government employees work harder than private sector employees, according to a survey of 1,000 adults by Rasmussen Reports.

Meanwhile, 70 percent of respondents said private sector workers work harder and 23 percent were undecided.

Rasmussen Reports states those numbers have not changed much since surveys dating back to December 2009.

Among government workers surveyed, 44 percent said private sector employees work harder than they do. In contract, 80 percent of private sector workers said they work harder than public sector workers.

The survey was conducted on March 25 and 26.

The perception of government employees as overpaid and underworked is having an impact on public sector paychecks and benefits. Federal employees are already facing a two-year pay freeze through 2012 and possibly even a three- or five-year freeze, based on bills proposed in Congress.

Other proposals include ending federal employees’ defined pension for new hires and mandating a ten-day unpaid furlough.
