Hurricane season is in full gear, and Adrian Gardner has to be ready.

The chief information officer of the National Weather Service says the stress on his technology infrastructure is more than noticeable.

He says NWS does a lot of capacity planning, and has teams that come together during weather events to figure out what needs to be done to accommodate the likely surge.

This is perfect example of how Gardner's role as CIO is both operational and strategic.

Gardner estimates that 60-to-70 percent of job is about operations, but at the same time he must look 2-3-5 years in the future to ensure NWS stays ahead of the technology curve, especially around supercomputing, data analysis and other highly technical areas.

The National Weather Service is moving into the Web 2.0 arena and revamping its Web site to improve how it provides data to its customers.
