Navy's Office of Naval Research sees the future as now
October 20, 2009 - 12:21pm
Brian Reilly uses a hockey analogy to explain the Office of Naval Research's mission. His organization, which is similar to other science and technology research and development offices across the government, has to "figure out where the puck is going to be and not where the puck is now."
That is why Reilly, ONR's chief information officer, is transforming the organization to take advantage of new technology and share information more easily.
Reilly says ONR is jumping into cloud computing--though he says he hates that term. The agency hopes to save or avoid paying about $500,000 a year by moving to Oracle on demand. He says it will make ONR's technology infrastructure more secure and keep it up-to-date.
He also wants to improve ONR's business processes and plans to hire a contractor this year to help the agency start to do that.
And finally, Reilly says ONR has begun piloting an advanced mobile computing device. He says the goal is to use one device to replace employee's laptop, desktop and even cell phone.
