NIH assessing how technology impacts biomedical research
December 29, 2009 - 10:11am
Encore Presentation, Originally aired Oct. 29, 2009 -- Jack Jones came to the National Institute of Health within the Department of Health and Human Services eight years ago to work on enterprise architecture and to take the agency to a new place technologically.
Now as the chief information officer, he's heading down that road. The difference is his viewpoint.
Jones, who also serves as the interim director of the Center for Information Technology, is taking on the broader problems of NIH.
And in the near future, he will give up his director of CIT role to someone else, and that person will take over the technology operations of the agency.
Jones still will be involved to some extent, but his main focus will be around several areas from cloud computing to knowledge management to health information technology.
But first, Jones says he is overseeing an assessment of how technology is currently supporting biomedical research, and how can IT further enhance the work.
He says the initial phase of this assessment is expected to be finished in early December.
NIH also is leading the governmentwide pilot to use the OpenID standard. NIH's test will let federal employees or researchers use their Google, Yahoo! or any other commercial username and password on the agency's network for no-risk applications.
He says it's an extension of NIH's current authentication system.
