Hurricane Irene has come and gone, but federal agencies are still responding to the damage it left behind.
U.S. Army North has been working with FEMA since last week, before the storm hit even hit the mainland.
Maj. Gen. Jeffrey Jacobs, the commanding general for U.S. Army North’s Joint Task Force 51, joined the Federal Drive to discuss how U.S. Army North is involved.
Jacobs said Army North’s mission is to be prepared for the unexpected.
“What we bring to this mission is capability,” he said. “We can use military capability to augment the capabilities of our state, local and federal partners (and) provide things they don’t have or provide things they’ve used up”, he said, such as helping establish shelter and restoring communications and providing medical assistance.
“You name it, we can bring the full capability of the Department of Defense to bear,” he added.
