Service members returning wounded from conflict face trying physical and mental challenges during the transition back to life at home. In light of these challenges, the DOD has teamed up with the Department of Veterans Affairs as well as the Department of Labor to create a new website, the National Resource Directory, meant to provide a one stop shop for veterans seeking a variety of support.

Dr. Linda Davis, Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Military Community and Family Policy at DOD, tells FederalNewsRadio what this new website does.

“It is a coast to coast yellow book that lets everyone in the american public and at any agency or non-profit organization throughout the country be able to reach out to our service members, our veterans and our families,” Davis says.

After listening to the needs of veterans and their families there were six key areas that the website needed to address.

  1. Benefits and compensation
  2. Education training and employment
  3. Family caregiver support
  4. Health
  5. Housing and transportation
  6. Services and resources

According to Davis, the beauty of the site lies in the ability of anyone to add it.

“There is convenient place to suggest a resource, its called suggest a resource. You just click on there and by completing a short online page you are able to add information on your organization, services or resources for wounded warriors,” Davis explains.

As service members return home from medical facilities across the country, the National Resource Directory is meant provide information on support that can be found locally in order to address their needs.
