Afghan tribes are neccesary on the battlefield to fight against the Taliban and other extremists in the same way local militias rose up to oppose insurgents in Iraq. Gen. David Petraeus, who’s now head of the U.S. Central Command and the former top U.S. commander in Iraq whose outreach to Sunni sheiks helped turn around the war in Iraq al-Qaida-inspired militants from key areas and sharply decreased attacks is hopeful the same thing will happen in Afghanistan.
