DHS names chief privacy officer

Mary Ellen Callahan has been named as the Department of Homeland Security\'s chief privacy officer.

Mary Ellen Callahan has been named as the Department of Homeland Security’s chief privacy officer.

“Our Privacy Office is viewed as a leader in the federal government in public outreach and as model for Privacy Impact Assessments,” says DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano in a prepared statement. “I look forward to the skill and experience Mary Ellen will bring to this robust and important office.”

Callahan is currently a partner at Hogan & Hartson, LLP, where she specialized in privacy, security, data protection, consumer protection, and e-commerce law for more than 10 years. She is also co-chair of the Online Privacy Alliance, and as vice-chair of the American Bar Association’s Privacy and Information Security Committee of the Antitrust Division.
