Police in a Florida city used the promise of economic stimulus checks to lure 76 people to their arrest on a variety of outstanding warrants.

The U.S. military can’t win credibility in the Muslim world through new public relations strategies and instead must pursue actions that build trust. That’s according to Joint Chiefs Chairman Admiral Mike Mullen.The top U.S. military officer took aim at burgeoning “strategic communication” efforts inside the armed forces in which officials plan how to present their operations and ideas to the public. Top officials – including Defense Secretary Robert Gates – have lamented that a country which leads the world in marketing and media has been out-communicated by al Qaeda leaders in caves.

U.S. Rep. Denny Rehberg and four other people are hospitalized in stable condition after their 22-foot boat ran into rocks in the dark.A spokesman for the Wildlife and Parks department said three people were flown to the hospital by helicopter after the accident sometime before midnight last night, but did not know if that included Congressman Rehberg.

Senator Joseph Lieberman says four years after Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast, the nation still is unprepared.The Connecticut independent and chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee writes to FEMA administrator Craig Fugate that the agency is in much more capable hands now, and it must continue to improve. Specifically, Lieberman calls on FEMA to complete the National Disaster Recovery Strategy. He also asks FEMA to respond to five questions by mid-October.

The American Federation of Government Employees has elected John Gage to a third straight term as national president. Gage won election Thursday during AFGE’s national convention in Reno, Nevada.In a release Gage says, the group’s focus is now on the midterm congressional elections and making sure the American people – quote – “have the public services they deserve.” Along with Gage, J. David Cox was elected as the National-Secretary Treasurer and Augusta Thomas is the new national vice president for Women’s Fair Practices.
