President Barack Obama sternly warned Wall Street today against returning to the sort of reckless and unchecked behavior that threatened the nation with a second Great Depression. Even as he noted the economy and financial system were pulling out of a downward spiral, President Obama warned Wall Street not to count on any more bailouts. He credited his administration and the $787 billion dollar stimulus package for pulling the country back from the brink.

Amnesty from the IRS. But it won’t last forever. Wealthy Americans who have managed to avoid paying taxes by hiding their foreign holdings have a week to turn themselves in. After that, any tax cheats found by the government face criminal prosecution. The IRS says, in one week of July, about 400 people turned themselves in under the amnesty program. That’s four times higher than the number of tax evaders who stepped forward in all of 2008. (Reuters)

Prisoners held at a U.S. base in Afghanistan will have their detention reviewed roughly every six months. Officials say the new policy will apply to about 600 Afghans held at a prison at the Bagram air base north of Kabul. It is part of the Pentagon’s effort to improve its image in that country. Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman says detainees will be assigned personal representatives to guide them through the review process.

If you got federal stimulus money, you know the deadline is right around the corner. You have until October 10 to report on the money you’ve received and spent. The Recovery and Accountability Board warns, if you haven’t registered on Recovery.gov yet, do it now. The second version, Recovery 2.0, will launch at the end of this month. So far, nearly 22,000 recipients are registered at FederalReporting.gov.
