  • The top U.S. general in Iraq says the Iraqi military performed superbly on Sunday’s mostly peaceful election day and that President Barack Obama’s plan to remove American combat troops from that country by Sept. 1 is proceeding on schedule. Gen. Ray Odierno says commanders will constantly reassess the situation. But he says that as of now, every sign points to Iraqi’s being able to peacefully form a new government in coming months.
  • Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton says the Iraqi election is a perfect way to counter the violent extremists who seek to derail Iraq’s progress. Clinton is thanking Iraqi officials and security forces for overseeing the polls and offering protection to voters. She also is commending American civilian and military personnel who supported those efforts. At least 36 people died in election day violence in Iraq.
  • he Treasury Department is allowing the export of Internet communications services such as instant messaging, e-mail and Web browsing to Iran, Sudan and Cuba to help people in those countries communicate. Deputy U.S. Treasury Secretary Neal Wolin said Monday that the change to existing trade sanctions Monday is intended to help people, “exercise their most basic rights.”
  • Blending behind-the-scenes nuggets with a defense of President Barack Obama’s record, White House and administration officials increasingly are communicating through Twitter. The popular social network is operating as a Web-based clearinghouse for public statements on weighty subjects (the federal budget) and the mundane (personal grocery lists). It’s similar to a bulletin board where anyone can post short notes and users cull the pieces they see by choosing to “follow” individuals’ account.
