Today in your Friday cloud news round up:

  • How were those Department of Treasury websites hacked earlier this week? Federal News Radio’s Daily Debrief got the answers from one of the men who discovered the attack. Roger Thompson is a chief research officer for AVG and explained how he and his team found the problems on the public Bureau of Engraving and Printing websites. Thompson also explains why he doesn’t think the cloud poses any more of a security threat than any other method.
  • Falls Church CSC has named Siki Giunta vice president of cloud computing and software services, Virginia Business News reports. She’ll lead CSC’s new Trusted Cloud and Business Hosting Group. She will be responsible for implementing a cloud computing strategy to improve CSC’s strengths in consulting systems design and cybersecurity.
  • Novell and Verizon are teaming up to secure apps in the cloud. ChannelWeb reports that the two companies have launched an on-demand Identity-as-a-Service offering, called Secure Access Services, which manages identity and access management. Among some of the things the Secure Access Services does: gives the ability to validate user identities through authentication; controls access based on identity through authorization; validatse who has access to what via reporting capabilities; creates a secure, consistent experience via a Web single sign-on; and extends access management through identity federation.
  • How do you audit and ensure regulatory compliance issues are being addressed in the cloud? It’s not as easy as one might think, mainly because many managers are still worried about turning over important processes to strangers. InformationWeek blogger John Soat writes more on his Cloud Perspectives blog about this issue.
  • And, um, just what does cloud mean, anyway? That’s the question the Wall Street Journal asked earlier this week. The article is basic, but very good at explaining what, exactly, the cloud is and why there’s so much buzz around the term. Even if you think you know all about cloud, it’s a good read!
