One of the biggest challenges IT executives face these days is managing data while staying within their seemingly shrinking budgets. That’s according to a recent poll of Storage Networking World conference attendees that was published in Computerworld.

Forty-two percent of the roughly 1,200 people polled said that their biggest data management challenge is working under tight budgets for staff, storage capacity and tools. Another top concern was long-term data preservation, which 23 percent of the attendees listed as main challenge.

But even if the IT executives had an unlimited budget, they may not necessarily have the best technology to support their data. According to the poll, 66 percent of people said they felt their IT infrastructure was only somewhat up to date.

But cloud technologies could be the silver lining to IT execs’ woes.

Thirty-six percent of those polled said they believe private-public cloud technologies and virtualization tools could help make their data centers more efficient.

Despite the potential time, money and effort IT executives could save by implementing cloud computing, they’re still concerned about reliability and security.

Of the respondents, 30 percent said they’re unsure if cloud service providers will be able to protect, backup and potentially restore their data. Other concerns the respondents cited were: giving cloud service firms custody of their data, transferring sensitive data over the Internet, and the unknown consequences of storing their data with information from other corporations.
