Could decades of poor management at the Energy Department threaten public health and national security?

A new report by a former Energy Department executive analyzed plutonium waste at five former nuclear weapons production facilities. He found in the past about 12.7 metric tons of plutonium were discarded — more than three times the department’s last official estimate.
