Federal agencies in Washington, D.C., are open on Thursday, December 16, but employees have the option for unscheduled leave or unscheduled telework due to the snow.

A winter weather advisory is in effect until 9 p.m. Thursday. The total snow accumulation is expected to be 1-3 inches, according to the National Weather Service.

Non-emergency employees must notify their supervisor if they plan to take leave or telework, according to an announcement from the Office of Personnel Management.

Eligible employees may:

  • Use annual leave, earned compensatory time off, earned credit hours, or leave without pay, OR
  • If permitted by agency policy, telework from home on a non-telework day, if the employee has a telework agreement in place that is approved for unscheduled telework.

Employees scheduled to telework on the day of the announcement are expected to begin telework on time or request unscheduled leave.

On Wednesday OPM said it is making a bigger push to allow telework options during emergency events.
