If your business posts an employment opportunity online, watch out — you may be targeted by crooks. In fact, the FBI reports that more than $150,000 was stolen from one U.S. business.
The company received an email in response to a job it had posted on an Internet employment site. Malware embedded in the email allowed the attacker to obtain online banking credentials of the employee who conducted financial transactions for the company. The malicious software changed the account settings and sent wire transfers to Ukraine, as well as to a couple of domestic accounts.
The FBI recommends running a virus scan before opening any email attachments. In addition, the agency recommends that businesses use separate computer systems to conduct financial transactions. The malware in this case was connected to the ZeuS/Zbot Trojan, which cyber criminals often use to defraud businesses.
