The Department of Homeland Security signed a memorandum to increase cooperation and sharing of cybersecurity threat information with India.

DHS Deputy Secretary Jane Holl Lute and India’s Department of Information Technology Secretary R. Chandrashekhar signed a memorandum of understanding today in New Delhi to extend global security and counterterrorism endeavors in both countries.

“Through this arrangement, the respective governments and broader cybersecurity communities in both the United States and India will have the ability to coordinate with their counterparts on a broad range of technical and operational cyber issues,” DHS said in a recent press release.

The agency said it started the conversation and the drafting of ideas for the memorandum with India in May during the launch of the 2011 U.S.-India Homeland Security Dialogue. A month later the Joint Indo-U.S. Working Group made final preparations for the agreement in Washington.

The agencies involved in the ongoing cooperative dialogue will include DHS’Computer Emergency Readiness Team (CERT) along with India’s DIT, Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) and its Ministry of Communications and Information Technology. DHS’s CERT manages information sharing and cyber issues for federal civilian agencies and the private sector.
