The Federal News Radio United Way Community Spotlight for June is the Washington Animal Rescue League (WARL).

The Washington Animal Rescue League, a private non-profit organization, was recently named one of the top ten emergency rescue partners in the nation by the Humane Society of the United States. Entering its 99th year, the League has a mission to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome animals who have nowhere else to go. Our facility is painstakingly designed from the animals’ point of view to make it one of the most humane animal shelters in the world.

The League rescues and adopts almost 2,000 animals each year, and is currently the temporary home to more than 150 dogs, cats, puppies and kittens looking to find their forever homes. To that end, the League is participating in the ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge, a competition amongst animal shelters throughout the United States, and hopes to find homes for 800 animals between June 1 and August 31.

The League is also home to a full-service Medical Center, providing veterinary services and vaccinations at discounted prices; a pet food bank for income qualified clients: certified behavior and training experts providing classes for pets and their guardians; and a humane education department to educate children about the importance of humane treatment of animals; all designed to assist area residents in caring for their animals .

The League is located at 71 Oglethorpe Street, NW, Washington, DC. Visit www.warl.org and lend us your support at www.warl.org/Donate!
