The Federal News Radio United Way Community Spotlight is the Shepherd’s Center of Oakton-Vienna.

Seniors Helping Seniors – For more than 15 years the Shepherd’s Center of Oakton-Vienna (SCOV) has been dedicated to providing services and programs to mature adults in the Oakton, Vienna area including portions of Fairfax and Reston.

Our country is aging rapidly and the Northern Virginia region is no exception. According to a 2012 report by the Administration on Aging, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the population 65 and over increased from 35 million in 2000 to 41.4 million in 2011 (an 18% increase) and is projected to increase to 79.7million in 2040. SCOV stands ready to help our growing population of older adults.

SCOV currently serves over 3,000 seniors in Fairfax County and receives no federal, state or county funding. Thanks to the support of over 200 dedicated volunteers and the generosity of individuals, businesses, civic groups, grants and supporting congregations we are able to return over 75 percent of our income in direct services and programs.

This award winning agency is one of Northern Virginia’s most recognized senior service charities and one of the most active. We help our older neighbors in two crucial ways:

1. By providing opportunities for the “younger” senior to find meaningful and fulfilling volunteer and educational opportunities to utilize their experience, training and skills in significant roles in society. These volunteers run programs such as the Call Center for Medical & Companion Drivers; Lunch n’ Life; Adventures in Learning; trips and outings; special events; caregivers’ support groups and more.

2. By engaging these “younger” senior volunteers, we are able to support the unmet needs of our more fragile “older” seniors who have limited mobility. Our services offer them the opportunity to maintain a productive, positive and engaged lifestyle while remaining in their own homes for as long as possible. ..Seniors Helping Seniors. To support the programs and services of SCOV, they will be hosting a Fall fundraising event:
