The mission of the USGS is to pursue science and Frazier says perhaps no enabler is as important as IT. He says it is not unusual for USGS scientists to push the limits of technology, at times even pioneering the technology that they will use to help drive their fields in the years ahead. He says making it even more challenging, at this point, is that not all of the systems are accustomed to working together, placing heavy demands on the USGS data integration strategy. That strategy aims to standardize all the information coming in so that it can be shared with other agencies, partners in the scientific community and the public. Finally, Frazier says the USGS is working to preserve and store that data, a challenge which may require both in-house and vendor solutions.
