The White House is asking Congress to pass a privacy bill of rights for the Internet. The legislation is aimed at protecting Americans from intrusive data gathering.

The privacy bill of rights comes amidst growing concern about targeted Internet use.

The Wall Street Journal reports the administration wants any new rules to be enforceable, asking the Federal Trade Commission to take the lead.

The bill will also make companies ask an individual’s permission to use personal data.
