  • You’re in the field — maybe even close to the front lines — can you use tools such as Facebook, Google Docs, the iPhone — even the iPhone’s Apps store, or Adroid’s Google Marketplace… And do they help warfighters accomplish their missions more effectively? Increasingly the answer is YES. Defense officials call them “edge” enabled systems, and it is part of the Pentagon’s efforts to use commercial hardware, software, and graphical user interface technologies for handheld, military-specific use. In a post on the DOD’s Armed With Science blog, Army officials say that their goal is to arm soldiers with the tools that they need to accomplish their mission. Increasing, those soldiers are born digital — and the Army has to find useful tools — and develop them quickly. The note that the recent Apps for the Army competition created several applications that soldiers can use. On the edge.
  • Today is a day that may have seemed to many like it would NEVER get here. It’s the deadline for our combat troops to get out of Iraq. And, the White House new media team has been busy working up some special presentations in observation of today’s deadline. They’ve rounded up videos – and other “salutes” for our veterans, troops, and their families – for their service since the start of the war in 2003. Those salutes come from tagged YouTube videos, Flickr photos, Twitter posts, and Facebook notes. From there, they pop up on WhiteHouse.gov. (You could also imagine something these being projected on a wall during welcome home ceremonies.)
