The United States is looking at new ways to get supplies to troops in Afghanistan. Air Force General William Fraser is President Obama’s choice to lead Transportation Command. During his confirmation hearing, he told the Senate Armed Services Committee that about 35 percent of the cargo for American forces travels through Pakistan. If Pakistan cuts that off, there would be a disruption in supply. So, the professionals at Transportation Command, working with U.S. Central Command, are looking at alternatives. One example would be an intratheater airlift. Ships would deliver material to the region, and intratheater lift aircraft would take it to Afghanistan.
