This morning’s federal news as heard on WFED:

Pay parity made it into both versions of budget resolutions passed in Congress. Government Executive reports the language does not set the amount of pay raises, but it does tie federal civilian raises with military increases. The House and Senate will iron out their differences before sending the bill to President Obama.

Later today Defense Secretary Robert Gates unveils next year’s Pentagon Budget. Analysts expect cuts to major weapons systems. The Pentagon says the budget will reflect a major shift in spending priorities.

The President has nominated former Clinton official Martha Johnson to lead the General Services Administration. Johnson was GSA’s chief of staff from 1996 to 2001. She was also part of President Obama’s transition team. Right now Johnson is vice president of culture at Computer Sciences Corporation. Her nomination now goes to the Senate for approval.

A delay in the confirmation process for the man tapped to lead Pentagon acquisitions thanks to the Air Force tanker. That man is Ashton Carter, but Alabama Senator Richard Shelby says he wants to make sure Carter won’t change the bidding criteria for the $35-billion dollar contract. Shelby says he’s worried the Pentagon will award the contract based on price alone. Shelby’s homestate is a possible site for the plane’s assembly.
