This morning’s federal news as heard on WFED:

The IRS sent out $16.3 million dollars in false tax refunds last year. That’s according to a new report from the agency’s inspector general. The IG’s office is calling on the IRS to improve how it monitors refunds.

The number of cost-plus contracts nearly doubled in the last eight years. A new report from The Office of Federal Procurement Policies finds that agencies spent $135 billion dollars on cost-plus contracts in 2008 alone. Under these contracts, agencies reimburse companies for expenses. OFPP says it’s taking steps to improve how agencies use the contracts.

eMail may have undermined covert security tests on airport screeners. That’s according to Homeland Security’s inspector general. GovExec reports the IG’s office says someone at the Transportation Security Administration tipped off airport screeners about the secret test back in 2006… putting screeners on their best behavior.
