This morning’s federal news as heard on WFED:

The ear of management turns to federal chief information officers. The majority of CISO’s responding to a new survey say they’re playing a larger role in securing agency networks. NextGov reports 9 in 10 say they’ve had a positive effect on cybersecurity. The survey is from ISC Squared. And it comes amid a rash of federal data breaches and rising concern about network security.

Troubled Defense programs are topping the agenda for the Pentagon’s new procurement chief. Ashton Carter says he plans to review DoD’s programs to make sure they’re moving forward effectively. Government Executive reports he will also focus on logistics and acquisition reform. Carter was sworn in Monday.

A White House aide may have sickened his family with H1N1. Early tests show it’s probable, but not certain. The aide was part of an advance team sent to Mexico ahead of Energy Secretary Steven Chu’s trip to the country.

H1N1 continues to spread in the US, and now Homeland Security is taking heat for not doing enough to prevent it. A group of lawmakers are calling on the department to beef up efforts to stop sick people from entering the country. FederalTimes reports there’s also a call to start using thermal cameras at ports and borders. The cameras would spot people with fevers. So far 130 cases of swine flu have been confirmed in the US. One death.
