Sniffing the air for anthrax has never been more high-tech. Scientists at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory have come up with sensors that can diagnose infectious diseases, track airborne toxins and even detect explosives in water systems. Fran Ligler is one of those scientists. Her work has netted her a finalist’s spot for the Career Achievement Medal in this year’s Service to America Medals, or SAMMIES. She joins to discuss her work as part of FederalNewsRadio’s “Sammies Tracker” series.
