The U.S. plan to defend Europe from a ballistic missile threat is reaching a milestone next week. A senior Defense Department official tells the American Forces Press Service that the USS Monterey will deploy from Norfolk, Virginia next week for a six month tour in the U.S. European command area. It will participate in missile defense exercises and help lay the foundation for future deployments. The first phase involves ships. The second phase will begin in 2015.
