Bill would mandate job training for vets

Training is currently voluntary and is run by the departments of Labor and Defense.

The Senate Veterans Affairs Committee has approved a bill that would require extensive job training for military members before they leave the armed services.

The bill, S.951, would require everyone leaving the service to participate in the Transition Assistance Program. The training is currently voluntary and is run by the departments of Labor and Defense.

Lawmakers hope the move will help cut the high unemployment rate among vets.
