Export controls would seem to run counter to the idea of boosting sales of American goods around the world.

But some technology is so important to national security, it has to be controlled.

Brian Nilsson, the nonproliferation director for the Weapons of Mass Destruction Directorate of the National Security Council helped turn U.S. export controls from a vague mish-mash of rules and regulations to a unified, modern system. The plan Nilsson helped come up with both protects national security and aids exports.

In addition, Nilsson’s work has earned him a nomination for a Service to America Medal.

He joined the Federal Drive to discuss how export controls work and what the National Security Council did to improve the system.
