The chief of the military’s Special Operations wants more authority and freedom to move his forces around the world. The New York Times reports, Adm. William McRaven is seeking a bigger role for his elite units. He wants more autonomy from regional commanders to position special forces where and when they are needed.

Special Forces have been receiving more assignments in recent years. The most visible of these was the rub-out of Al Qaida leader Osama Bin Laden last May. McRaven’s plan would also allow Special Operations forces to expand in Asia, Africa and Latin America.
