The Obama administration has been fascinated with use of social media in government since the get-go. One early and enthusiastic adopter was the State Department. Its e-diplomacy and public engagement efforts use a variety of social media tools and techniques. The agency is aimed at talking to many constituencies across the world and within the department. Williams spoke with Federal News Radio Monday at the Management of Change Conference in Cambridge, Md.


Dr. Patricia HayesChief Consultant, Women Veterans Health Strategic Health Care Group, Veterans Affairs Department

Hayes has revolutionized veterans’ health care by pushing for female vets’ needs in a male-dominated system. She did it by simply recognizing the difference between male and female health needs. Hayes is a finalist for the 2012 Service to America Medals in the career achievement category.

Robert GordonExecutive Associate Director, Office of Management and Budget

The ink isn’t dry on the government’s fiscal 20-13 budget, but the Office of Management and Budget already is giving agencies new advice for 2014. In a recent memo, OMB asks agencies to report their most innovative uses of evidence and evaluation when they draft their new budget blueprints. Plans that demonstrate a strong commitment to the development and use of evidence are more likely to receive funding.

Congress once required the federal government to favor American-made products by passing the Buy American Act. A proposal with a similar goal could be coming up though Congress. A more detailed label to tell consumers which country makes their favorite shoes, cosmetics or electronics is gaining bipartisan support. Uke is the person with the idea to add a country of origin label on all imported products.


Steve LaFountainTechnical Leader of Cyber Ops Program, National Security Agency

The government hopes to grow a new generation of cyber spies. The National Security Agency has launched a cyber ops education program to turn college kids into cybersecurity professionals.
