DARPA floats crowdsourcing to develop amphibious vehicle

No one knows whether crowdsourcing would produce a better military vehicle than an experienced Defense Department contractor, but DARPA is willing to give it a try.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency is looking into whether open collaboration can produce a design for a Marine Corps amphibious vehicle.

The Wall Street Journal reports, DARPA is seeking a way around escalating developmental costs. The Marines abandoned a new vehicle project in 2011. Its development price tag from General Dynamics had already topped $3 billion.
