NIST wants software to help spot smartphone security holes

The National Institute of Standards and Technology wants software to test software. Specifically, it wants testing tools that will spot the security holes in apps developed for Android smartphones.

The military, working through DARPA, is trying to develop its own marketplace of apps for helping troops in the field. The effort is called the Transformative Apps program.

Because apps will be developed by third parties, DARPA and NIST want to make sure they are resistent to malicious hackers. The contract to develop the testing tools will be set aside for a disabled veteran-owned small business.
