DoD needs to reassess approach to substance abuse issues, report says

In a new report, the Institute of Medicine said the Pentagon needed to get a grip on the reality of troops’ substance abuse problems.

The researchers said outdated prevention methods combined with staff shortages and a stigma against alcohol and drug-related disorders means the Defense Department is not not keeping up with a public health crisis.

The study found nearly half of military members and families “binge drink” meaning they consume four or five drinks or more at a time.

One in every five active-duty service members say they are heavy drinkers.
