It’s not just accountants who are busy during tax season. It’s prime time for identity thieves too. The Internal Revenue Service has more than doubled the number of employees working on tax-return related identity-theft since 2011. The president’s new budget calls for heftier jail sentences and new civil penalties for fraudsters among other changes.
President Barack Obama’s 2014 budget request would give cyber programs throughout the government a boost. The National Institute of Standards and Technology, for one, would have more money for cyber research and development. Each year the SANS Institute trains thousands of people in and out of government in cybersecurity.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel wants military commanders to be largely stripped of their power to change criminal convictions of service members. His move comes after protests from Congress. A military court had found Air Force Lt. Col. James Wilkerson guilty of sexual assault. His commander, Gen. Craig Franklin, overturned the verdict. Outrage ensued.

For years, Pell Grants from the Education Department have helped underprivileged kids go to college. Since 2009, spending on Pell Grants has nearly doubled to $34.5 billion dollars. But a new study by the College Board says too few Pell recipients ever graduate. It’s calling for an overhaul of the Pell Grant program. Workplace violence has declined quite a bit in the last few years, in both the public and private sector. But you may be surprised to know that non-fatal violence occurs three times as much in government than it does in business. That’s according to a new report from the Bureau of Justice Statistics. Erika Harrell, a statistician at BJS, wrote the report.

The price tag for instituting the Dodd Frank Act in President Obama’s 2014 budget is $4 billion. It would be split among six financial regulatory agencies. Cady North, a senior financial analyst at Bloomberg Government, conducted a study on the subject.
