May 1, 2012 — Vivek Kundra set an ambitious goal to drastically reduce the number of federal data centers.

It has been estimated that the federal government has over 3,000 data centers, and it will take drastic action to reduce that number by a third.

Tom Deierlien is the founder of a company called ThunderCat Technology that provides assistance to federal agencies who are endeavoring to accomplish this herculean task.

ThunderCat is in a position to view the tools to assist in this reduction and select the best of breed.

On today’s show, Deierlien gives specific examples from agencies like the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS), the Army Corps of Engineers, and Customs and Border Protection.

One differentiator for ThunderCat is that it partnered with NetAPP, Knight Point Systems, and Riverbed to product an easy-to-use web site that assembles best practices for managing data centers.

It is called, appropriately, FDCCIConnect.com.

You can visit this site and review the six phases as well as see videos from leading federal IT managers on methods they have successfully used.
