April 9, 2013 — Federal IT professionals who have “served their time” remember what it was like to meticulously comb through logs in order to find out what caused an “event.”

About eight years ago, this process evolved with companies offering services that were called SEIM, or Security Events Incident Management services.

When terabytes of information started to flood systems, companies like Splunk began to offer systems analysis tools.

Today, there are over 85 products in this category.

Today’s interview is with Bill Cull, the vice president Public Sector for Splunk.

During the show, Cull expands upon some of the challenges with monitoring disparate systems.

Today’s portfolio of applications may include everything from Oracle databases to big data systems like Cassandra and Hadoop.

Splunk is available in a traditional server version, cloud offering, and even a free offering for folks to test drive.

Splunk has become popular in many federal agencies.

They expect over 600 people to attend their Splunk Live! event at the Ronald Regan center in May.
