January 28, 2014 — This week on “Federal Tech Talk”, host John Gilroy interviews Brian Ahier, a nationally known thought-leader in the area of healthcare information technology.

Ahier has just come back from the Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) for Health Information Technology, which is a staff division of the Office of the Secretary, within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The interview is a summary of the leading topics at the ONC event as well as some sage observations from Ahier.

He also talks about the big revelation at the conference.

The conference announced a new director, Karen DeSalvo, MD.

She is the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology and oversees the ONC.

Dr. DeSalvo worked in New Orleans after Katrina to help sort out the mess of paper records and giving assistance to people in a disaster area.

Other topics that were covered include meaningful use, electronic health records, health data security, mobile health (mHealth), and health information exchanges.

Ahier has had a career as a health information professional and brings that practical experience to the table.

During the interview you will learn that he is from Portland, Oregon and provides a perspective that is not common within the beltway.
