Reporters’ Roundup: Commerce IT, pay bump coming?

Stories our reporters are covering on June 17, 2011.

These are the stories Federal News Radio reporters are working on today.

  • The Commerce Department is changing how it buys commodity technology. And it has to because out-going Secretary Gary Locke set a stretch goal of saving 50 million dollars in 2012 by centralizing its IT purchasing. Simon Szykman is the Commerce Department’s chief information officer. He tells reporter Jason Miller about the steps the agency is taking to reach that stretch goal.
  • At a time when most people are talking about a pay freeze, Federal News Radio Senior Correspondent Mike Causey is writing about some public servants who are getting an increase. Mike’s here to talk about who’s getting more money when you’re probably getting the same or less.
  • The Senate Armed Services Committee’s version of next year’s defense authorization bill cuts several billion dollars from the amount DoD proposed to spend next year. Federal News Radio’s Jared Serbu reports that one of the major ways they got to those savings is what committee leaders call a “hiring freeze” on contractors.
