  • The Federal Emergency Management Agency is running out of money to get them through the end of the fiscal year. They’re focusing all of their remaining 900 million dollars on the response to Hurricane Irene. FEMA Director Craig Fugate says the agency won’t start new projects from past disasters unless Congress gives them more money.
  • The Labor Department warns it won’t be able to make workers’ compensation payments to federal employees unless the Postal Service makes a $1.2 billion payment by October 1. USPS has suspended advance payments to the Federal Employees Retirement System as it tries to preserve cash. Labor says a Postal default would affect two million federal workers.
  • The Acting Director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Kenneth Melson will leave that job. The move comes during a Justice Department Inspector General’s investigation into “Operation Fast and Furious.” His replacement is B. Todd Jones. He’s currently a U.S. Attorney in Minnesota.
