  • The Coast Guard is moving to Apple and Android-based smartphones for its workforce. The Guard will phase out their Windows Mobile phones as they refresh their inventory. The Guard’s chief information security officer, Capt. David Dermanelian, says the devices won’t need Common Access Card readers, because the devices won’t be directly connected to the Coast Guard’s dot-mil network – they’ll connect through so-called “sandbox software.”
  • The Social Security Administration doesn’t have a long-term plan to serve customers electronically, according to the agency’s Inspector General’s office, Federal Computer Week reports. IG Patrick O’Carroll says SSA’s Agency Strategic Plan isn’t good enough because it plans only three to five years out. O’Carroll says the agency isn’t prepared to meet the Future Systems Technology Advisory Panel’s recommendation to move to an electronic self-service model.
  • Health and Human Services is launching its “Lifeline Facebook App Challenge.” The agency wants developers to build a Facebook app that will let citizens use their own social networks to prepare better for disasters. The deadline for submissions is September 15th.
