  • President Obama will nominate Ashton Carter to be the next deputy secretary of Defense. If he’s confirmed, Carter will replace William Lynn. Carter is currently the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics.
  • Still no movement in the FAA authorization standoff. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s office says there aren’t enough votes in the Senate to pass the House version of the bill. The House has already started their August recess. They’re not back in session until after Labor Day.
  • The Justice Department is one step closer to a new Inspector General. President Obama has nominated Michael Horowitz for the job. He’s a partner at the Cadwalader, Wickersham and Taft law firm, and a former Justice Department lawyer.
