  • The trust fund that supports Social Security disability will run out of money by 2017, according to a new analysis. Applications are up nearly 50 percent from a decade ago. That’s causing a backlog of applicants who may wait two or more years before their cases are resolved. The trustees who oversee Social Security say Congress should use money from the retirement program to provide short term relief.
  • Post office closing appeals may get easier. The Postal Regulatory Commission is proposing to reduce delays for appeals. The Postal Service plans to close 3,700 post offices around the country as it struggles to remain solvent.
  • The NRC is making some recommendations for U.S. nuclear facilities based on what they’ve seen at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant in Japan. The Commission has established a Task Force to examine the agency’s regulatory requirements, programs, processes, and implementation of information from the accident following the March 11th earthquake and tsunami. The NRC wants its staff to write a series of papers and recommendations based on the Task Force’s work.
