  • Why can 40 FAA safety inspectors can continue to work despite being furloughed? An FAA officials tells Federal News Radio these 40 safety inspectors are deemed essential or critical employees. Federal regulations for all agencies allow for essential or critical employees to continue working during a shutdown.
  • The White House has chosen a new federal Chief Information Officer. Steven VanRoekel will take over the position for the outgoing Vivek Kundra. The former Microsoft executive also served as managing director of the Federal Communications Commission.
  • You can expect a new job performance system as early as September 30th, if you’re in the Senior Executive Service. An interagency working group under the President’s Management Council is putting the issue on the fast track. OPM Director John Berry says the working group will look at existing best practices in performance management within the government.
  • The Joint Forces Command is closing today. The closure is part of former Secretary Robert Gates’s savings efforts. A closure ceremony for the 12-year-old command took place at the Joint and Coalition Warfighting Center in Suffolk, Virginia.
