DoD establishing cyber allies

The Defense Department has outlined a strategy to extend traditional treaty alliances to cyberspace.

The Defense Department has outlined a strategy to extend traditional treaty alliances to the cyber world, senior officials speaking at a Georgetown University event said last week.

Beginning last year after President Barack Obama’s statement that “hostile acts in cyberspace could compel actions under our mutual defense treaties,” DoD officials are working with the NATO allies to establish a NATO Cyber Incident Response Center. The center is expected to open later this year.

In addition to NATO allies, DoD has also reached out to South Korea, Japan and New Zealand to establish norms of international behavior for cyberspace, including provisions for sharing sensitive information in the event of a cyber attack.
