This underscores the critical importance of performance, accountability, and results in government management and its premise on the belief that citizens have the right to hold federal government accountable for its performance. Today, the U.S. Department of the Interior has evolved into the principal federal conservation agency managing the protection of many of the nation’s special natural, cultural, and historic places.
